Gua Pindul is in Bejiharjo village in the Karangmojo district, a few kilometres north of Wonosari and around half an hour’s drive from Jomblang. Where Jomblang is vertical and dramatic, Pindul is horizontal and gentle: an underground river about 350 metres long that you float along in an inflated inner tube, wearing a life jacket, with a guide towing the group.
The trip takes around 45 minutes and passes through three zones — light, twilight and total darkness — before emerging into a pool beneath a skylight in the cave roof. Along the way guides point out stalactites, curtains and columns, including formations the villagers have named and given stories.
Most visitors combine the cave with river tubing on the Oyo (also spelled Oya), reached by a short ride in the back of a pickup. The river runs between low limestone cliffs with a small waterfall and rocks to jump from.
What to see and do: Pindul Cave & Oyo River
Cave tubing in Pindul
Lie back in the tube and let the current and the guide do the work. The water is calm and deep in places; non-swimmers are fine in a life jacket.
Oyo River tubing
A longer, sunnier float of around an hour or so, with a stop at a small waterfall where you can jump from the rocks if the level allows.
Jump in under the skylight
Near the exit of Pindul the roof has fallen in, lighting a deep green pool where guides usually let visitors swim.
Add Gua Glatik or Gua Sriti
Local operators also offer short dry-cave walks nearby for those who want more underground time.

Insider tips
- Go on a weekday if you can. On weekends and Indonesian holidays Pindul is very busy and the cave can feel like a queue of tubes.
- Wear swimwear under quick-drying clothes and sandals that strap on. Lockers and changing rooms are available at the operators’ bases.
- Several community operators run the same cave from different bases; prices are similar and are usually charged per activity. Check what your tour includes.
- After heavy rain the water turns brown and the Oyo may be closed for safety.
- A waterproof phone pouch is worth having; guides are generally happy to take photographs.
