Shopfronts and evening traffic on Malioboro street in Yogyakarta

Where to Stay for Jomblang Cave

There is no hotel at the cave. Stay in Yogyakarta for choice and comfort, or in Gunungkidul for a shorter morning.

Jomblang has a simple basecamp but no real accommodation market of its own, so the decision is between two bases: the city of Yogyakarta, 1.5–2 hours away, or Gunungkidul itself — the town of Wonosari half an hour from the cave, or the resorts along the south coast.

Yogyakarta is where nearly all tours start and where you will want to be for Borobudur, Prambanan and the city’s own sights. It has everything from heritage five-stars to plant-filled boutique hotels. Gunungkidul suits travellers with their own driver who want to avoid the 6 a.m. start, or who plan a second day at the beaches.

Guest scores below come from Trip.com. Rates change constantly with season and room type, so every card links out to Trip.com for live prices and availability.

How to choose

  • First time in Yogyakarta, three or four nights? Stay centrally, near Malioboro or Tugu, and do the cave as a day tour.
  • Like cafés and a village feel? Prawirotaman, which is also on the right side of town for the Wonosari road.
  • Travelling with children? A resort-style hotel with a big pool on the east or north side.
  • Have a car and driver, and hate early starts? Sleep in Wonosari the night before and reach the cave in half an hour.
  • Want the sea? Add a night on the Gunungkidul coast after the cave rather than before it.

Booking tips

  • July, August, the Eid week and the year-end holidays fill the best city hotels. Book a month or more ahead for those dates.
  • Tell your hotel you have a 6:00 departure; most will prepare a breakfast box.
  • Ask whether your tour picks up from your address — hotels far outside the ring road or near the airport may carry a surcharge.
  • After the cave you will be muddy: a hotel with a laundry service, or at least a good shower, is worth having.
  • Airport hotels in Kulon Progo are useful for flights but are around 95 km from Jomblang — not a base for the cave.

Once your bed is sorted, pick the day itself: our ranked tour comparison covers the cave and the combinations worth adding.

Stand in the light of heaven

Places in the cave are limited each morning. Compare the best-rated Jomblang tours from Yogyakarta, add Pindul, Timang Beach or the temples, and book in a couple of taps.

Good to know

Where to stay: common questions

Frequently asked questions

Can I stay at Jomblang Cave itself?

The operator’s basecamp has offered very simple lodging at times, but there is no regular hotel at the cave and nothing we can link to with live rates. The nearest reliable hotels are in and around Wonosari.

Which part of Yogyakarta is closest to Jomblang?

The south and east of the city — Prawirotaman, Kotagede and the Jalan Wonosari side — are the quickest for getting onto the road to Gunungkidul. The difference from Malioboro is around 15–20 minutes.

Is it worth staying in Wonosari?

If you have your own transport and want a later start, yes. It is a plain working town with limited dining, so most visitors still prefer the city.

How many nights should I book?

Three nights in Yogyakarta covers Borobudur and Prambanan, the cave, and the city. Add one for Merapi or a night on the coast.
