Yogyakarta to Jomblang Cave

About 50 km and up to two hours from the city — and you need to be there early. Here is every way to do it.

Jomblang Cave is in Jetis Wetan, Pacarejo, in the Semanu district of Gunungkidul, roughly 50 km south-east of central Yogyakarta and about 10 km beyond the regency’s main town, Wonosari. The drive takes 1.5–2 hours depending on traffic leaving the city.

Two things shape the journey. First, timing: there is one session a day, registration is in the early morning and descents generally start around 9:00–10:00, so you should aim to arrive by about 8:00–8:30 — which means leaving the city around 6:00–6:30. Second, the last few kilometres: after the turn-off from the main road, the route narrows to a rough, rocky track through teak and cassava plots. Parts have been improved over the years, but expect a slow, bumpy finish.

By organised tour

The straightforward choice. A driver collects you from your hotel, knows the turn-offs, gets you registered in time and waits while you are underground. Most tours carry on to Pindul, Timang Beach or Prambanan afterwards. Compare them on our best tours page, and check whether the cave fee is in the price.

By private car and driver

Hiring a car with a driver for the day gives you the same convenience with your own timetable. It is priced per vehicle, so it is good value for three or four people. The driver will usually help with registration; you pay entrance fees yourself. You can book one through GetYourGuide or through your hotel.

By scooter

The Wonosari road is a busy, winding climb used by buses and trucks, and the final track is loose rock. Riders should have a valid licence for motorcycles with an international permit, real experience and travel insurance that covers riding. Leave by 6:00, and remember you will be riding back tired and muddy. If any of that gives you pause, take a car.

By public transport

Buses and minibuses run from Giwangan terminal in the south of Yogyakarta to Wonosari, taking around 1.5–2 hours. From Wonosari there is no regular public transport to the cave; you would need a motorbike taxi (ojek) or a chartered car for the last 10 km, and to arrange the same for the return. It can be done, but it is difficult to do in time for the morning session — staying the night before in Wonosari makes it realistic.

The route

  • Yogyakarta to Piyungan: east out of the city on Jalan Wonosari, across the ring road.
  • Piyungan to Patuk: the road climbs the escarpment in a series of bends, with views back over the plain at Bukit Bintang. The turning for Nglanggeran is here.
  • Patuk to Wonosari: across the plateau through Playen and the Gunungkidul teak forests.
  • Wonosari to Semanu and Pacarejo: east of town, then signed lanes and the rough final track to the cave basecamp.
Use the right pin. Map apps sometimes route cars down farm tracks that are barely passable. Follow the signs for “Goa Jomblang” from the Semanu road, or simply let a local driver lead.

Arriving in Yogyakarta

By air

Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) is in Kulon Progo, about 45 km west of the city. The airport train (KA Bandara YIA) runs to Tugu station in the city centre in roughly 40 minutes and is usually the quickest and most comfortable way in; check the timetable, as departures are spaced through the day. Damri buses and taxis take 1–1.5 hours by road. Because the airport and the cave are on opposite sides of the city — around 95 km apart — going straight from a morning flight to Jomblang is not realistic. Arrive the day before.

By train

Tugu station, at the north end of Malioboro, has frequent services from Jakarta (around 6–8 hours), Bandung, Surabaya and Solo. It is the pleasant way to arrive from elsewhere in Java.

From Solo (Surakarta)

Solo is about 60 km north-east of Yogyakarta, with a commuter rail link between the two. Jomblang can also be reached from Solo by road in roughly 2–2.5 hours via Klaten.

Getting on from Jomblang

  • Pindul Cave: about 20 km, 30–40 minutes.
  • Kalisuci: a few kilometres, 10–15 minutes.
  • Indrayanti and the central beaches: 30–35 km, about an hour.
  • Timang Beach: about 35 km, 1–1.5 hours plus the jeep transfer.
  • Prambanan: about 45 km, 1.25–1.5 hours.
  • Central Yogyakarta: about 50 km, 1.5–2 hours — longer in the late-afternoon traffic.

Getting there: common questions

Frequently asked questions

How far is Jomblang Cave from Yogyakarta?

About 50 km from the city centre, which takes 1.5–2 hours by car. From Wonosari it is about 10 km and 20–30 minutes.

What time should I leave Yogyakarta?

Around 6:00–6:30, to arrive by about 8:00–8:30 for registration. Tours set the pickup time for you.

Can I take a Grab or Gojek to Jomblang?

You may find a driver willing to take you there, but getting a ride back from the cave is unreliable. If you use ride-hailing, agree a return fare and waiting time with the driver in advance — in effect, hiring them for the day.

Is the road to Jomblang really that bad?

The main roads are fine. The final stretch from the village is narrow and stony, and slow in an ordinary car, though it does not need a 4×4 in dry weather.

Can I go to Jomblang straight from the airport?

Not sensibly. The airport is around 95 km and well over two hours from the cave, and the only session is in the morning. Spend the night in Yogyakarta or Wonosari first.
