The stone towers of the Prambanan temple compound

Prambanan & the Ramayana Ballet

Java’s great Hindu temples, and a show beneath them

Prambanan is the largest Hindu temple compound in Indonesia, built in the mid-9th century on the plain 17 km east of Yogyakarta. Its three main shrines are dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma; the central Shiva temple is 47 metres high and covered in carving, including a balustrade that tells the Ramayana in a sequence of panels.

Earthquakes brought down most of the complex centuries ago, and reconstruction of the main towers was only completed in the 20th century. Hundreds of smaller shrines still lie in tidy heaps of stone around them. The site was inscribed by UNESCO in 1991, and the park also contains the Buddhist temples of Sewu, Lumbung and Bubrah, usually almost empty.

Prambanan sits near the junction where the road from Gunungkidul rejoins the main Yogyakarta–Solo highway, which makes it the easiest major sight to pair with a morning at Jomblang.

What to see and do: Prambanan & the Ramayana Ballet

Enter the Shiva temple

Four chambers hold statues of Shiva, Agastya, Ganesha and Durga — the last linked in local legend to the princess Roro Jonggrang, turned to stone.

Follow the Ramayana reliefs

Walk the inner balustrade of the Shiva temple clockwise to read Rama’s story in stone, continuing on the Brahma temple.

Walk or cycle to Candi Sewu

About a kilometre north inside the park, this large Buddhist complex with its giant guardian statues predates Prambanan and sees a fraction of the visitors.

Watch the Ramayana Ballet

A two-hour dance-drama with gamelan. In the dry season, roughly May to October, it is usually staged on certain evenings on the open-air theatre with the floodlit temples behind; otherwise in the indoor Trimurti theatre.

Sunset at Ratu Boko

The ruins of a hilltop palace 3 km south give a wide sunset view back over the Prambanan plain.

How to get to Prambanan & the Ramayana Ballet

  • From Yogyakarta: 17 km, 30–45 minutes by car; Trans Jogja buses and local trains also reach Prambanan.
  • From Jomblang: about 45 km, 1.25–1.5 hours — on the way back to the city.
  • By tour: see the Jomblang + Prambanan combination and ballet tickets.

Insider tips

  • Late afternoon is the best time: softer light, lower temperatures and fewer school groups.
  • Ballet schedules, start times and venues vary by season and day of the week. Check the current programme and book seats ahead in July and August.
  • As at Borobudur, foreign visitors pay a much higher entrance fee than Indonesians; combined tickets with other temples are sometimes offered.
  • If you are coming straight from the cave, change out of your muddy clothes first — it is a place of worship as well as a monument.

Prambanan & the Ramayana Ballet FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Can I visit Prambanan after Jomblang on the same day?

Yes. You are usually out of the cave by about 13:00–14:00, and Prambanan is roughly an hour and a half away, leaving time for a late-afternoon visit before it closes.

When is the Ramayana Ballet performed?

On selected evenings throughout the year, outdoors in the dry season and indoors otherwise, typically starting around 19:30. The schedule changes, so confirm for your date.

Borobudur or Prambanan — which should I choose?

See both if you can: one is Buddhist and massive, the other Hindu and vertical. If you have a single afternoon after Jomblang, Prambanan is the practical choice.
