Pantai Timang is on the coast of the Tepus district, about 35 km south of Jomblang. The beach itself is small; the attraction is a rocky islet, usually called Pulau Timang or Watu Panjang, that stands a hundred metres or so offshore in heavy surf. Local fishermen, who harvest lobsters from the rock, rigged a cableway of ropes and a wooden cradle to reach it, hauled across by hand.
That working gondola became one of Java’s best-known thrill rides, shown on foreign television programmes. Passengers sit in the open wooden frame while a team on the cliff pulls them across above the breaking waves, often catching the spray. A suspension bridge was later built alongside for those who prefer to walk.
What to see and do: Timang Beach
Ride the gondola
The crossing takes only a minute or two each way, with time on the rock in between. It is operated by the fishing community and runs when the sea state allows.
Cross the suspension bridge
A swaying plank bridge with rope sides gives you the same view at your own pace, and is the better option for photographs.
Eat lobster
Simple restaurants at the top serve the local catch grilled or in sauce, priced by weight. Agree the price before ordering.
Take the jeep
The last stretch to the beach is a rough limestone track. Visitors transfer to a local jeep or motorbike taxi from the parking area, which is half the fun.
How to get to Timang Beach
- From Jomblang: about 35 km, 1–1.5 hours by car to the jeep transfer point.
- From Yogyakarta: around 75–80 km, 2.5 hours or more.
- By tour: several day tours combine Jomblang or Pindul with Timang.
Insider tips
- Gondola and bridge fees are charged separately, and are noticeably higher for the gondola; prices change, so confirm on the day and check whether your tour includes them.
- The gondola stops in strong wind and high swell, which are more common in the middle of the year. The bridge is less affected.
- You will get splashed. Keep cameras protected and wear shoes with grip — the rock is sharp and wet.
- Swimming is out of the question here: this is open Indian Ocean with powerful waves.
- This is a rope system built and run by villagers, not a certified cable car. Decide for yourself whether you are comfortable with that.
