Nglanggeran Ancient Volcano

A short scramble to a huge view

Gunung Api Purba Nglanggeran rises above Nglanggeran village in the Patuk district, about 25 km east of Yogyakarta on the way to Wonosari. Geologists identify it as the remnant of a volcano that was active tens of millions of years ago, long before Merapi existed; what survives is a cluster of rounded towers of volcanic breccia up to around 700 metres above sea level.

The village manages the site as a community tourism project, and Nglanggeran has been recognised internationally as a model tourism village. The hike is short but entertaining, threading through narrow clefts between boulders, up wooden ladders and along rock shelves to open summits with views over the Yogyakarta plain to Merapi.

What to see and do: Nglanggeran Ancient Volcano

Hike to the summit

Allow one to one and a half hours up and slightly less down. The path is clear, with rest shelters, but includes steep, narrow and sometimes slippery sections.

Catch sunrise or sunset

Sunrise brings a sea of mist over the plain in the dry season; sunset lights the towers orange. Both mean walking partly in the dark, so bring a torch.

Visit Embung Nglanggeran

A small hilltop reservoir a short drive from the trailhead, surrounded by fruit orchards, with an easy path around it and a classic sunset view of the volcano.

Try local chocolate

The village grows cocoa, and a community workshop sells chocolate drinks and snacks made from it.

How to get to Nglanggeran Ancient Volcano

  • From Yogyakarta: about 25 km, 45–60 minutes by car via the Wonosari road, turning off at Patuk.
  • From Jomblang: around 35 km, about an hour — a natural stop on the way back to the city.
  • By driver: few fixed tours include it, so a private car with driver is the practical option.

Insider tips

  • After Jomblang you will be tired and muddy; Nglanggeran works better as a sunrise stop before the cave or on a separate day.
  • Wear proper shoes. The rock is grippy when dry and treacherous when wet.
  • A modest entrance fee is charged at the gate, with a higher rate for foreign visitors and for night or dawn entry.
  • Avoid the hike in heavy rain or thunderstorms.
