Sri Gethuk waterfall cascading over limestone ledges into the river

Sri Gethuk Waterfall

A waterfall straight into the Oyo River

Air Terjun Sri Gethuk is in Bleberan village in the Playen district, west of Wonosari. Springs on the plateau feed streams that tumble over a series of stepped limestone ledges straight into the Oyo River, which here runs in a narrow, steep-sided valley.

The falls flow all year, which is unusual in dry Gunungkidul, and they are at their prettiest in the dry season, when the river is clear and green. In the wet months the Oyo turns brown and fast and the rafts may not run.

What to see and do: Sri Gethuk Waterfall

Take the raft

Villagers run simple rafts on oil drums up the river from the car park to the foot of the falls — a few minutes that give the best view of the gorge.

Swim under the falls

In the dry season you can stand under the lower cascades and swim in the river in a life jacket.

Walk the rice-field path

A footpath through paddies and coconut palms leads to the falls in about ten minutes if you prefer to walk.

See Rancang Kencono cave

A small cave with an old tree growing from its entrance, a short distance away on the same village ticket.

Frequently asked questions

Can I swim at Sri Gethuk?

Yes, when the river is calm and clear. Life jackets are provided with the raft ride.

How much time do I need?

One to one and a half hours is enough for the raft, the falls and a swim.
